My youngest son has a physical disability; he contracted polio as a toddler and is paralysed on his left leg. He required greater level of physical care as a child growing up in Nigeria, where services and resources catering to people with disabilities were scarce. He has completed a number of operations on his leg and has required extra care during recovery to support the healing process and to ensure no infection. I was able to take advice from and work with his consultants and I was responsible for his care following his operations. This occurred both in Nigeria and in the UK and my son missed attending school during these times. As well as caring for his physical needs, I worked to ensure that he was able to bridge the gaps in his education.
I have always had a strong focus on education and belief that education creates a ‘level playing field’; with this view, I have encouraged access to education for all of my children; and have ensured that my son’s additional needs were met by ensuring effective communication and sustaining a good relationship with the education department and with his school.
My youngest son is now 31 years of age, with master degree and an engineer by profession, working for a reputable company in London.
In my previous experiences, I have worked with young people aged 0 to 18 with a range of additional needs. I have cared for vulnerable children of school age with learning difficulties, Down syndrome, Autism and ADHD.
In my job at the YMCA, I was able to support vulnerable young people (with social, emotional, behavioural and learning difficulties) aged 14 to 18 years old, supporting their access to education or training provisions and development of independent living skills.
Presently as a child minder, I care for a 9-month-oldbaby whowas bornprematurely anduses an oxygen cylinder.
I am currently completing an online course with Pacey - an introduction to children diagnosed with Autism spectrum disorder and supporting children with speech, language communication needs.
