Other notes

Olsen House School, is an independent school based in Crosby, registered with Ofsted for boys and girls aged seven to 16 years, who are struggling from social, emotional and behavioural problems, with or without mental health difficulties.

Our New Bluebird Unit, supports children and young people with various education and social needs, including those with ASC, ADHD, ODD, dyslexia and dyspraxia.

The Involve programme, seeks to work with both the young person and their family in a supportive and nurtuting manner.  Our ulitmate aims are to engage the young person back into full time education whilst at the same time supporting the family to grow stronger in order that they manage day to day routines and boundaries without the support from profressionals.

The school follows the National Curriculum where it is deemed appropriate and personalises timetables around the needs and aspirations of the child.

Pupils are supported in very small class sizes and each curriculum is tailored to meet their educaional needs.

Pupils can enjoy a wide range of learning

opportunities with a choice of qualifications including GCSE’s and BTEC.

At Olsen House School, we have a value-based approach to education, we focus strongly on each pupil's development to give them the best opportunity to succeed.

Local Offer

Description

All students are referred to Olsen House School through a Local Authority.

On referral the school makes a decision to offer a placement based on the needs of the child.

The school follows this up with a visit to the school with either parent/carer or responsible adult (the school will liaise with the referring local authority about the needs of the pupil).

The school undertakes an assessment on all pupils over a six week period, through baseline testing in academic areas and diagnostic testing where deemed necessary.

Throughout the pupils pathway at the school, some children may benefit from a therapeutic intervention, a referral or enquiry for this will be made by a staff member with parental consent.

All persons involved with the child are consulted in the process of our pupil’s education. The school also provides a range of opportunities for pupils to grow and develop as the move towards early adulthood.

Pupils, parents/carers are always invited into the school as part of the learning process. This provides an opportunity to talk about all your childs educational development.

The school has three parent days a year (one per term) for parents, families and carers to attend and this gives the opportunity to review IEP progress, and progress towards external accreditation with teachers.

It also allows all of the people involved with the pupil an opportunity to discuss personal and social progress as our Educational Psychologist, Speech and Language Therapist will be present on these days.

At our parent days, we  endeavour to deliver updates to parents on our latest practice i.e. ASC, Learning Outside the Classroom award, Department of Education changes in policy or keeping children safe and other current issues.

All pupils are baseline tested on arrival. They will spend time as part of an induction period working on assessment materials and then once familiar with the school, in classrooms.

The school uses various processes to measure progress on a daily, weekly, half termly, termly and annually basis.

The school uses electronic data tracking, Classroom Monitor to analyse its data and keep a comparison to national levels.

Pupils are also encouraged to assess their own progress during lessons and at the end of each half term as this keeps them actively involved in their own learning pathway.

Pupils have a wide range of accreditation they can access including functional skills, GCSE’s and BTEC, alongside short course accreditation in additional areas such as climbing, lifesaving, Duke of Edinburgh, Arts Award and horticulture.

All courses taken in partnership with colleges and vocational centres are accredited and are tailored to the appropriate pathway to adulthood for our pupils.

Curriculum areas are appropriately set up with generous budgets to keep up with technological change.

The school has specialist areas for food technology, science lab, ICT, therapeutic intervention and quiet high support working areas.

The classrooms are spacious and well presented to best support the curriculum being delivered. The school has quality security systems in place.

The school buys in services that support the pupil’s development including behaviour and attendance officers, speech and language therapists, educational psychologists, careers and preparation for adulthood advisors.

The school works closely with Kedleston School’s Cultural Learning and Development Officer to promote learning outside the classroom as a way to encourage inclusion into the mainstream.

All P.E. is held offsite including climbing hangers, Crosby Leisure Centre and gym, Crosby Lakeside Activity Centre and the local all-weather football pitches.  Pupils regularly visit galleries, museums and work with the staff at these establishments.

Visits to the theatre and cinema are also frequently used to support the curriculum.

Transition and Induction periods are tailored to the individual pupil.  Most pupils have a stepped induction into the school through a period of individual timetables and outreach work at home.  This allows school to take the correct steps to plan and assist the new pupils with access to the school and its curriculum.

The school has an accessibility plan that is available on the school website and in hard copy at the school.

The school works with placing local authorities regarding transport.  Those pupils who are unable to travel independently access transport that is authority funded.  The school strongly encourages independent travel and works with local authorities, pupils and parents/carers to make this possible.

The school funds transport for pupils to college and vocational placements during the week but will work with pupils and parents/carers to reduce this and encourage independent travel as part of schools preparation for adulthood approach.

The school holds three open days for parents/carers and professionals to access the school and meet all those involved in the pupils life.

The school regularly runs information sharing sessions for parents/carers and will provide additional support for families of pupils who require extra support.

This is a growing provision and we are happy to listen to all involved with the school as to how we can offer more areas to help our pupils have successful outcomes.
