Adaption and Housing Info


Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) is a central government grant and is non-means-tested for children and young people under 18 years of age.  These type of adaptations include, level access showers, wheelchair access in/out of the property, ground floor bedroom and bathroom facilities, ceiling-track hoisting, and safety adaptations for children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

The limit for the DFG is up to £30,000 (inclusive of fees).  This is the maximum available and the amount awarded is dependent on the outcome of the assessment from an Occupational Therapist (OT).

Owner occupiers (OO) and private landlord (PL) tenants are able to obtain full DFG funding.  If an extension is required at the property, both OO and PL’s have to agree not to sell their property within 10 years otherwise they have to pay a percentage of the DFG back.

If you live in a Registered Social Landlord (RSL) property (e.g. Liverpool Mutual Homes, Cobalt, Riverside, etc.), a letter is sent from the OT to the RSL with recommendations of adaptations. It is at the individual Landlord’s discretion whether they agree to provide the recommendations for the individual.  There is an expectation that RSL’s will contribute towards the DFG funding (sometimes up to 50% of the total cost of the works).  Some RSL’s advise families to re-house to more appropriate accommodation to maximise resources and to make best use of housing stock.



There are two different re-housing registers in Liverpool, Property Pool Plus and Access Liverpool.

Property Pool Plus (PPP) is for all general housing stock across Liverpool and neighbouring boroughs (Wirral, Knowsley, Sefton, etc.).  This housing stock is for non-adapted homes for anyone wanting to re-house.  Anyone can apply to PPP, however if you require an adapted property then you will not find any adapted properties on PPP (unless you are willing to move out of the Liverpool City area as other boroughs hold their adapted houses on PPP).

Access Liverpool is a separate re-housing register for anyone requiring an adapted property. It is a partnership between the Council and RSL’s in Liverpool, and provide properties that have been specifically designed or built for disabled people. RSL’s contact Access when they have an adapted property that has become vacant.  These adapted properties are then matched to the people on the waiting list based on their needs and chosen postcode areas.  Access then contact the applicants that match the properties and offer the family to view the property.  If an applicant declines the property then this will go to the next person on the waiting list.
