Liverpool and Knowsley Special Educational Needs & Disability Information Advice and Support Service (SENDIASS)

Welcome to Liverpool and Knowsley SENDIASS, we offer advice and support around various topics relating to Special Educational Needs and disabilities (SEND) for children and young people aged 0-25 living in the Liverpool and Knowsley Area District and their families.

We are funded by Liverpool City Council and Knowsley Metropolitan Borough Council but the service is managed independently by Barnardo's. We provide free, confidential and impartial support – which means we do not take sides and we try to ensure that everyone’s views are expressed and heard. We can offer information advice and support by telephone or email, and by more focused methods depending on individual need.

How does the Service work?

Any child or young person with special educational needs or a disability or their parent or carer who needs help regarding their own or their child’s education and related health and social care issues can contact us.

We offer information, advice and support over the telephone and by email,. If you contact us by telephone please leave a message clearly stating your name, number and a brief description of your concern. A member of staff will contact you to discuss your circumstances.

We also offer self-advocacy support, this means help with speaking up at meetings, and support at SENDIASS office to complete forms. This service is available for those families that need it most.

What do we do to help?

SENDIASS offers support to parents and carers of children and young people with SEND (0-25) in the Liverpool and Knowsley Area. We can also support your child or young person to access the service independently.

We can:

  • Provide access to information and advice which enables parents/carers and their children to make informed decisions
  • Help to explain the content of reports/letters/draft EHCP
  • Make telephone calls on parents’ behalf and support them with writing letters
  • Support parents to arrange meetings with schools and other professionals and attend the meetings with parents if required
  • Accompany parents/carers on visits to alternative educational settings if required
  • Liaise with schools, the local authority and other agencies to promote positive relationships with parents, carers and young people
  • Equip parents, carers, children and young people with the skills and confidence to work with professionals and have their voice heard
  • We have links with parents’ groups and voluntary organisations as well as other services, so we can point you towards other sources of help and support. We also have links with forums that services use to consult parents when planning to change or develop the services they offer
  • We work to the national standards set out for Information, Advice and Support Services in the SEND Code of Practice (2015)
