1. How does the setting know if children need extra help and what should I do if I think my child may have special educational needs?

 

When your child first starts with us, we have a very formal one to one chat with you about your child and any specific needs that they may have are discussed here. If any special educational needs are declared, we work very closely with parents and other agencies around to offer the best support that we can for the best interest of the child.

 

We follow the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) and here we are able to track each child’s development in all of the seven areas. If we feel a child is not meeting certain parts of the EYFS criteria this would be discussed at our regular progress meetings with parents, were we are able to liaise with one another in order to offer the best support we can.

 

We have a trained SENDCO (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Co-ordinator) who has background experience working with children with special educational needs.

 

 

 

2. How will the staff in the setting support my child?

 

The SENDCO in our nursery will help support our other members of staff by offering them relevant advice. We will then also work very closely with both child and parents.

 

 The way in which the staff in our setting will support your child is by having regular progress meetings with their key person about your child’s development within the setting. We observe and monitor each individual child and then discuss this at our regular meetings.

 

 

3. How will the curriculum be matched to my child's needs?

 

We follow the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) and use this in order to monitor each child’s individual developmental progress.

 

When your child first starts with us, a member of staff will have a small informal chat with you regarding your child’s transition to us. Here we discuss likes/dislikes of your child and all other relevant information is recorded down on our transition form.

 

 The EYFS has seven areas which consist of Personal, social and emotional development, Physical development, Communication and Language, Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the world and Expressive arts and design. All of the criteria in the areas are met by staff doing regular observations on the children and also through group work.

 

 

4. What specialist services and expertise can be accessed by the setting?

 We work in very close partnership with our local authority and also the speech and language team.

All of the staff here at Much Woolton Old School Nursery are first aid trained and our SENCO is fully trained and keeps up to date with any new training that becomes available. Just recently, our SENCO completed the SENCO award qualification. From obtaining this, she has gained a lot more knowledge about the role which includes early intervention and the different needs and disabilities of children that we as a setting may be faced with. Our SENCO has then fedback all information that she has gained to all staff members in the setting.

5. How accessible is the setting?

We are happy to discuss your child individual needs and to make reasonable adjustments if necessary.

 6. How will the setting support my child in transferring to the next stage of education?

 Our nursery manger attends an annual transition meeting that is also attended by teachers from schools, all around the Liverpool area. We start chatting to the children about their ‘big school’ nearer their departure date. At the moment our pre-school children are enjoying the task of serving themselves their dinner, which is offering them independence. We perform lots of different activities for our pre-school children to get involved in, in order to prepare them for their next steps in life.

 A detailed transition report will be written by your child’s key person. This will be then be passed on to your child’s new setting before they start.

 When the children have been designated their schools our nursery manger will then either go to the schools to visit the teachers or they are invited here to our setting.

 7. How are parents involved in the setting? How can I be involved?

When your child first starts we have a chat about you’re their interests in order for us as staff members to build a rapport with your child. We also have regular progress meetings were any concerns by both the key person or parents are able to be raised. During progress report meetings, your child’s key person will ask you for any contributions to your child’s individual file. This helps parents feel more involved with their child’s development. Parents are informed that they are able chat to their child’s key person whenever they wish to regarding any issues they may have.

 We also send out questionnaires asking parents their views and opinions with regard to all aspects of the day to day running of our nursery, and will adapt it to the best of our ability following feedback.
