The Silver Line Helpline

The Silver Line operates the only confidential, free helpline for older people across the UK that’s open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days of the year.
Our specially trained Helpline team can:
- Offer immediate friendship and comfort to lonely and isolated older callers
- Help with information on all issues faced by older people
- Refer older callers to other sources of support, such as regular weekly calls with a trained volunteer
- Signpost callers to appropriate support services they may find helpful in their area.
- Support older callers who may be suffering from abuse or neglect
The number to call, any time of the day or night is 0800 4 70 80 90.
Working with Age UK, we also link people to the Telephone Friendship Service, which matches older people with a friendly volunteer, for regular weekly calls

- Other notes
The Silver Line is a 24 hour free and confidential helpline available for any older person, no matter where they live in the UK and is open every day and night of the year. It offers information, friendship and advice and callers can access the service whenever they need to speak to someone, using a simple number 0800 4 70 80 90 which is free of charge from both landlines and mobiles.
In addition to the helpline, The Silver Line signposts older people to other charities and local services which can provide additional support. For those wishing to receive a regular telephone call we have volunteer ‘Silver Line Friends’ who are specially trained to support older people. The matched volunteer will call every week for around 30 minutes, offering a regular telephone befriending service.
For those who have hearing loss or who are not confident on the telephone, we offer ‘Silver Letters’. This is a weekly letter exchange between an older person and a matched volunteer. The individuals write a letter on a fortnightly rotation, meaning that each week they will either be writing or receiving a letter.
The SIlver Line also offers 'Silver Circles', a facilitated group conversation via a telephone conference call. For many of the participants it is the first time in many years that they have enjoyed chatting to and socialising with a group. Each Silver Circle has a lead topic on a shared interest of all participants. This offers a main theme for each weekly conversation.
