East Prescot Nursery School is a Liverpool Local Authority Nursery School. We provide Nursery Education for up to 104 three and four year olds. Children attending East Prescot Nursery School move on to attend a number of local Primary schools with whom we have developed strong links.

1. How does the school know if children need extra help and what should I do if I think my child may have special educational needs?

  • There is an opportunity to talk through your child’s application to Nursery with the Administration Manager (Vivienne Clague), the Headteacher (Colette Bentley) or the Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (Moira Kelly). This is especially important if you feel that your child may need support to access the school building or may need extra support in class.
  • There are times to visit the Nursery before an application has been made and to talk to staff about your child. This will help you decide if we can meet your child’s needs.
  • All children are observed and their progress monitored in the Communication & Language; Physical Development and Personal, Social & Emotional development. These are known as the ‘three prime areas’ as identified in the Early Years Foundation Stage document. There are four ‘specific areas’ – Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding of the world and Expressive arts and design. If there are concerns about progress or if any child needs extra support then this is identified early and acted upon. This may mean small group intervention or individual support. These interventions may be daily or two or three times a week. Teachers monitor the success of these interventions, judging their effectiveness by the impact on pupil’s progress.
  • If your child is new to our school then progress and development to date will be discussed with the previous nursery/child minder.
  • If you think your child has special needs and this has not already been identified by the school, then an appointment can be made to see the class teacher, SENCo or Head Teacher and your child’s needs can then be discussed.
  • Some children will make good progress and come off the SEN register. 

2. How will school staff support my child?

  • The class teacher with the support of the SenCo and other relevant professionals will plan the education programme for your child.  This plan will say what we hope to do; when and how long for and which adults will be involved with your child. The plan will be drawn up in partnership with you and you will be given a date for a review. The class teacher or SenCo will explain this to you and you will be given the opportunity to meet with other professionals that are advising us.
  • The SenCo provides a written report annually to the Governing body and this is made available to parents in the governor’s report to parents.
  • We will evaluate the effectiveness of interventions/plans at meetings and we use our internal tracking system to monitor the progress of your child. 

3. How will the curriculum be matched to my child’s needs?

  • Each class team will ensure that the work your child receives is at an appropriate level for their ability. This will ensure that your child can complete any tasks set and will build on their prior learning.
  • You will be invited to discuss your child’s progress on a regular basis, any concerns you might have can be addressed by making an additional appointment to meet with the class teacher or SenCo.
  • The school will carefully monitor, assess and track the progress of your child throughout the year.  This information will be shared with you and your child’s next school.

How will I know what progress my child should be making?

  • Your child’s targets will be regularly updated and reviewed with you and any other professionals involved with your child.  This process will inform future steps and progress being made.  This will give you an opportunity to discuss any concerns and help you to support your child at home.
  • We will keep you informed of any parent workshops available, these are planned to help you to support your child. 

4. What support will there be for my child’s overall well- being?

  • Your child will be supported across all areas of their school life, whether emotionally, physically or socially. 
  • If your child has any medical needs these will be discussed on an individual basis, during the application process, initial meetings with the class team and when necessary to update our records.
  • The school operates a positive behaviour policy with clear boundaries, this increases attendance and reduces exclusions.
  •  All children are valued as individuals and are encouraged to value and respect others.
  • We have a medicine policy in school; if your child requires regular medical intervention this can be discussed on application and a medical plan will be drawn up. This may mean that we need to access specialist training and equipment. We will discuss these needs with you. If your child requires short term medicine we will discuss these needs with you and an administration of medicine plan will be drawn up. 

5. What specialist services and expertise are available at or accessed by the school?

We are able to access specialist services and expertise through regular half-termly meetings with a group of local schools (this is known as Consortia). All our staff are highly trained and experienced. We regularly attend training to improve and develop our practise. 

6. What training are the staff supporting children and young people with SEND had or having?

Staff are trained through regular INSET days and training accessed via Consortia.  The SenCo regularly attends local authority briefings which includes legal updates and sharing good practise. If we require any additional training to meet your child’s needs we will plan for this.

 7. How will my child be included in activities outside the classroom including school trips?

Our school offers an inclusive trips and activities suitable for all children in our care. All activities are carefully planned and adapted to meet all our children’s needs. There will be a full risk assessment carried out before any planned educational visit. Some trips are supervised solely by the school team and there are times when parents and carers help. If you are concerned about a planned school trip you will be able to discuss your child’s needs with their class teacher, Head Teacher or the SenCo. 

8. How accessible is the school?

  • We are fully wheel chair accessible with clearly marked entrances and exits. We have a range of play surfaces planned to challenge and develop the children’s physical skills and you may wish to visit school if your child requires support with mobility.
  • We have a portable Loop system.
  • There are disabled toilet facilities.
  • If your child requires specialist equipment to help them access Nursery or our curriculum this can be discussed on application of a place. 

9. How will the school support my child to join the school and how will the school support my child in transferring to the next stage of education?

  • We value the time before your child joins us and there are many opportunities to discuss your child’s needs before they start with us. As well the chance to take a tour of the school we offer an initial visit in the half term before your child’s admission date. If your child requires additional support we can arrange for your child to have additional visits and we will plan and share any resources that may help your child.
  • When you find out the next stage of your child’s educational journey we will work with the next school and yourselves to make the transition to reception a smooth one. We can arrange for schools to visit and there may be opportunity for us to visit them We share information, resources and strategies that we know have worked well with your child to help maintain continuity of care for your child. 

10. How are the school’s resources allocated and matched to a child’s or young person’s special needs?

  • As a Local Authority Maintained Nursery School we do not have a specific allocated special needs budget but obtain funding from the local authority to work towards meeting the needs of the children in our care. All our staff are highly qualified and very experienced. There is a general allocation for special educational needs within the general funding. We carefully plan our spending. If we know of any future need we endeavour to meet the needs of all of the children in our care, this can mean that resources to support children may be available based on the current years budget.

11. How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child receives?

We have in Nursery a provision mapping (showing which equipment, resources and staffing are available) and we track and monitor your child’s progress, we can obtain advice and support through the Consortia.

  • In school we adopt a graduated response to meeting a child’s needs. This means we record concerns about a pupil at class meetings and determine a timescale for a classroom based intervention and expected outcome.
  • We will keep you informed about your child’s progress and if your child requires further work we may plan small group intervention.
  • We will review with you the impact of interventions and if appropriate access further support from outreach services at the Primary Consortia.
  • We will always plan your child’s support with you, review progress and try to meet needs within our own resources.
  • If your child requires additional specialist support we will discuss with you the pathways to more specialist support/provision.

 12. How are parents involved in the school? How can I be involved?

  • There are many opportunities to take an active part in life of our school, we value your input, advice and support.
  • We have regular newsletters from the classes and general school information. There are information boards in the foyer and our on our website.
  • At times during the year there will be the opportunity to help in the form of questionnaires and requests for help around the school.
  • When positions become available we have elections for the role of parent governor.
  • We are happy to offer individual appointments to discuss specific issues with you about your child’s progress.
